The LERNEN FÖRDERN-Bundesverband is the national association for people with learning disabilities in Germany. It has been founded in 1969 by parents and supporters. Actually it has about 20 000 members in 400 groups on local, county (Kreis) or state (Land) level. The members are parents, teachers and other supporters of people with learning disabilities.
The association is
- The lobby for the improvement of children and young people with learning disabilities towards social and vocational integration and participation
- Organization of self help groups, in which people with disabilities, their parents and relatives and their friends support themselves
- Organizer or provider of offers for therapy, schoolish learning, vocational training and social skills
The main focus of the association's lobby work is:
- Optimizing of early diagnosis and therapy
- Participation in organizing schoolish learning
- Additional offers in school and educational (social pedagogic) support
- Support for integration in work
- Consulting for parents and self help group
- Help and offers for spare time, holidays and independent living,
- Public relation work for the needs of people with learning disabilities
- Representatives in committees for the needs of learning disabled on local, county (Kreis), state (Land), federal and European level
- Promotion of scientific research
- Edition of the quarterly magazine "LERNEN FÖRDERN"
- Edition of publications to aspects of assessment and treatment of learning disabilities
Although volunteers do the most part of the work, more and more local groups become provider for:
- Courses for vocational orientation and preparation
- Vocational training and apprenticeship
- Compliance and support during vocational training in business
- Support in transition from school to work
- Job assistance and support for integration in work
- Initiatives of creating jobs for people with learning disabilities
The "LERNEN-FÖRDERN-Bundesverband" is a None-Profit-Organization and a None-Governmental Organization (NGO). The structure is basic democratic. The federal office arranges contact, gives addresses and supports local groups.
The association is member of European Action of the Disabled/Action Européenne des Handicapés (AEH)
